Check out this PCB that Mike Flanagan made! He took a very popular fuzz pedal, made some slight tweaks to a few values, sent me one to build and said, "Hey! You guys should sell these!" We said, "Sure! Why not?"

It's great on bass and guitar. The sounds is super compressed, gated, and loaded with tons of overtones.

What this is…

 

This is a work a like to a very popular fuzz pedal (think fuzzy elephant). It works great on both guitar and bass. It uses very common parts and should be a fairly quick and easy build. This PCB was designed to fit into a 1590B enclosure. You can use either top or side mounted jacks.

**Build Notes**

 

  • R6 can be swapped for another value if needed. I personally have used 4.7k, 5.1k, and 5.6k and have noticed no tonal change in the sound

  • R8 is a Current Limiting Resistor (CLR) for the Bypass LED. If you are using one of "these" then you can omit it entirely. If not I recommend anything from 5.1k to 10k depending on how bright you want your LED.

  • I put the LED as optional because some of you like to use "Bypass Daughter Boards". If you are using one like this feel free to omit R8 and use the CLR and LED space on the bypass board or vice versa.

  • The LED space on the board is powered when the circuit is powered. If you’re going to go with an “always on” design you won’t want to use this.

  • The range on the 2n3904 is pretty vast. However, I’ve noticed that most NPN transistors will work. Be sure to socket the transistor spots and audition them if you want. Just beware of the “pinout” of different transistors.

  • Transistor voltages from my test build  

 

Controls

 

Vol: This controls the output level of the pedal

EQ: This is used kind of like a “tone” control

Bite: This controls the pitch of the fuzz

Fuzz: DOOM!!!
